dc.description.abstractIn this thesis we examined the alternative supply of district heating of Kozani, using biomass boilers for warm water production system and cogeneration technologies. Initially, we analyzed in every detail, the concept of district heating and presented the historical evolution, the way it works the energy market as well as the best practices from Europe and Greece, such as cities from Western Macedonia. Then, we analyzed the types and sources of biomass, such as agricultural and forest residues, the properties of the biomass and the energy recovery methods. Also, we made a reference in the supply chain of biomass, which is a critical parameter for successful exploitation of biomass. In the next section of this thesis we described the technology of cogeneration and pointed out the most common and widely used co-generation systems. Then, we presented with technical details the district heating system of Kozani. In the next chapter, we presented three alternative methods for the operation of district heating, including biomass boilers, cogeneration with Organic Rankine Cycle technology and combination of them. Finally, we conducted feasibility analysis of these three scenarios using the method of Net Present Value and IRR method and we presented the final conclusions.en_US
