Abstract

The phrase “Once upon a time…” is indelibly written to everyone’s mind since ancient times. Fairytales, stories and myths have been unflappably narrated by parents, grandparents, educators and narrators. The reason behind the current dissertation lies to the practice the writer did on the 3rd kindergarten School of Florina, as, during two months, it was obvious that the children were really engaging while listening to a fairytale being read and continuously wanting another one to be read.

Their acute interest and their immediate response was really worthwhile creating questions on the way an educator can combine language transferal along with creativity and entertainment while teaching. To this point, fairytales illustration comes forward as it is quite important especially in preschool years. It was decided then that fairytales and their illustrations should be further examined. Their genres, their evolution through time, their value as well as the importance of the image- illustration alongside with the fairytale text that can create thoughts and emotional reaction to children. The dissertation was further enriched with a qualitative content analysis research on a fairytale book regarding colours and shapes. The text chosen was “A little candle for the little rhino” by Eugene Trivizas, one of the renowned fairytale authors in Greece and abroad.
