Abstract
Sleep quality in college students is an important parameter of their life as college students. The aim of this study lies in the survey about the influence of sleep in the performance of a team consisted of Greek students.
This survey was conducted in December 2017 in the facility of Education in of the university and the Technological Educational Institute of Florina and it included a sample of students of the 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th year. Two questionnaires were used for the survey. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index , which was used for the evaluation of the students’ sleep duration, the quality of their sleep and the sleep-wake cycle that they have created, while Sleep-50 by Spoormaker was used to evaluate student’s sleep disorders. The academic performance was calculated with a self-made scale and was separated into three categories: the grades 5-6,5 , 6,5-8,5 and 8,5-10.
150 questionnaires were handed out and 147 of them were used in the survey. 106 questionnaires out of 147 were marked with the grades 6,5-8,5 , 26 questionnaires were marked with 8,5-10 and 13 questionnaires were marked with 5-6,5. Two questionnaires weren’t marked with the average grades (GPA). It was observed that the higher the average point the better sleep quality the students had and the less possibilities to develop a sort of sleep disorder.
In conclusion, the best sleep quality has apparent effects on better performance in university. There were many students who had a bad sleep quality, though. Consequently, it is important for there to be notifications in universities about the benefits of sleep to academic performances aiming at prevention.
